At Cheslyn Hay Dental Practice, we aim to offer all our patients the highest quality dental treatments. With our highly qualified experienced team of professionals, we can provide you with a comfortable dental experience with confidence. We provide a range of general dental and cosmetic treatments.

Dental Examination

Dentist in Walsall dental examination
We firmly believe that prevention is better than cure and we are committed to providing our patients with excellent standards of preventative and general dental care. We advise our patients to attend regular dental examinations so that we can identify and treat developing conditions early on and keep an eye on your general oral health.

During routine check-ups we will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth and carry out oral cancer screening, as standard. We recognise that it is extremely important to detect conditions early and treat them before they get worse - this will save you suffering with tooth pain and discomfort. Our aim is to help you keep your teeth for life, and make the most of your natural smile.

Dental Hygienist and Gum Disease Treatment

Dentist in Walsall Dental Hygienist and Gum Disease Treatment
Our dental hygienist is highly trained and committed to providing patients with a comprehensive cleaning service. Our hygienist will remove tartar and plaque; tartar cannot be removed by brushing alone. We use the latest cleaning technology and also offer advice on diet, oral hygiene and general oral health.

Gum disease is the swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main types of gum disease: 'gingivitis' and 'periodontal disease'. Without proper management, gum disease may keep progressing until the teeth become loose and can eventually fall out. 70% of adult tooth loss is caused by gum disease. It is often called a silent disease because there may be no pain or obvious symptoms, until the disease becomes advanced.

Regular visits to the hygienist will help to reduce the risk of gum disease as well as treating problems such as bad breath, and staining of the teeth. Our patients benefit from having their own personalised preventative programme tailored to meet their individual needs. Many of our patients appreciate the feeling of a professional clean, as it leaves their teeth looking and feeling healthy, smooth and radiant.

Air Polishing

Airpolishing is a dental treatment that cleans and polishes your teeth using a highly controlled fine spray mixture of water, air and powder such as sodium bicarbonate. It is an ideal addition to a scale and polish.

It is a gentle, highly effective treatment for removing staining on teeth, such as from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, which can help reveal the natural whiteness of your teeth.

Dental Fillings

Dentist in Walsall Dental Fillings
We aim to improve your smile while conserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible “minimally invasive dentistry”. A filling replaces part of a tooth that has been lost, or removed because of dental decay. Most people are familiar with traditional metal fillings called amalgam, however, white (composite resin) fillings are much more natural looking and virtually invisible.

In many cases we can simply remove existing worn-out fillings and decay, leaving only natural tooth remaining. The lost tooth structure can then be replaced using composite resin, resulting in strong, lifelike fillings.

Many people prefer white fillings rather than metal ones, and some people choose to replace existing fillings with white alternatives to achieve a brighter smile.

Teeth Whitening

Dentist in Walsall Teeth Whitening
This is a safe and very effective procedure for making your teeth look whiter and more youthful-looking. One of the quickest and easiest ways of improving your smile is by whitening your teeth. Dark and discoloured teeth can be transformed, giving you a brighter smile and more self-confidence.

Tooth whitening will change the colour of natural teeth but it will not change the colour of existing fillings, crowns or veneers.

We offer a professional home whitening treatment. This involves custom made soft whitening trays which are made & into which the whitening gel is placed; the trays can be worn overnight if this is your preference. Different concentrations of gel can be used in different circumstances and the dentist will prescribe the concentration that he or she feels most appropriate. Typically the trays are worn over a 7-14 day period after which we will review the results with you. Tooth whitening is an excellent way to brighten up your smile so call today to take up our unbeatable offers.

Veneers

Dental veneers can be the cosmetic dental treatment choice for those who want to improve the aesthetics of their smile quickly and efficiently. They are ideal for those with:
  • Crooked teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Discoloured teeth
  • Tooth gaps
Dentist in Walsall Dental Veneers
Dental veneers act as thin 'shells' that are placed over worn teeth, and can vastly improve the appearance of a smile. Sometimes a natural colour ‘composite' material is used instead of porcelain. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten the front teeth.

What does it involve?
The dentist will firstly need to assess whether you are suitable for treatment. If you are, then treatment will typically involve the following steps:
  • A mild anaesthetic is issued to ensure you feel no discomfort. Veneers usually require preparation of the teeth, which means that your teeth may need to be reshaped so the veneer can be placed perfectly on your teeth. Treatment time will vary depending on how many veneers are needed

  • The veneers are bonded in place and polished to make them shine. The colour of the surrounding teeth is matched on a shade guide to make sure that the veneer will look entirely natural.

Extractions

Dentist in Walsall Dental Extractions
Having a tooth removed can be a daunting experience however when undertaken with care, this can be a stress-free procedure. We always use topical anaesthestic gel before administering the local anaesthestic (LA). The gel or cream numbs up the surface of the gum such that when the LA is given, it is much more comfortable and virtually painless.

Saving a natural tooth, if possible is always our aim however if the tooth has a poor long-term prognosis because of a crack or infection then extraction and replacement may be advised. The space may be left or we can arrange to have the missing tooth replaced with a removable partial denture, a bridge or a dental implant.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is needed when the blood or nerve supply to the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury, which may spread and eventually lead to an abscess. The aim of this treatment is to remove all infection, after which the roots are cleaned and sealed with a special filling material to prevent further infection.

Dentist in Walsall Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a skilled procedure and takes time to undertake it carefully. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist. With modern anaesthetics and care, root canal treatment can be a pain free procedure. We take care to ensure your treatment is a comfortable experience.

Crowns

When a tooth is very broken down or has been weakened by decay or a very large filling, it maybe necessary to provide a crown in order to restore the tooth to its natural shape and strength. A crown is sometimes known as a ‘cap’.

This involves shaping the tooth, taking an impression, and asking a skilled technician to hand craft a customised crown, which is subsequently fitted in place with a special adhesive. Crowns are made from many different materials, for example, gold alloy or porcelain bonded to metal.

Dentist in Walsall Dental Crowns
Porcelain bonded to precious or non-precious metal: this is what most crowns are made from. A precious or non-precious metal base is made and then porcelain is applied in layers over it.

Porcelain crowns: these crowns are made entirely out of porcelain and are not as strong as bonded crowns, but they can look very natural and are most often used for front teeth.

Gold alloy crowns: gold is one of the oldest filling materials. Today it is used with other metals to increase its strength, which makes it a very hard-wearing restoration. These crowns are silver or gold in colour.

At our practice we also offer All-ceramic crowns: this modern material is metal free. It can give the strength of a bonded crown and the appearance of a porcelain crown. This makes it suitable for use in almost all areas of the mouth.

With older porcelain bonded to metal crowns, over time the metal margins can become visible and unsightly at the gumline if the gum shrinks back slightly, however these old crowns can now be replaced with all-ceramic crowns significantly improving the appearance. Treatments for missing teeth

Dentist in Walsall underline

There are 3 ways of replacing missing teeth:
  • Bridge
  • Denture
  • Implant

Bridges

A bridge is an artificial tooth (or teeth) fixed to natural teeth on one or both sides of a gap. Some bridges have crowns at each end that fit over the natural teeth; others are fixed to the surface of the teeth next to the space.
Dentist in Walsall Dental Bridges
What are the benefits of dental bridges?
Bridges can:
  • Restore your smile
  • Restore your ability to properly chew and speak
  • Distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position.

Each bridge is carefully hand crafted by a skilled technician to emulate the natural teeth as closely as possible. A bridge may take the place of one or more missing teeth and the results can be excellent with good function and aesthetic results. With careful maintenance a well-made bridge can last many years.

Dentures

Well-made dentures can improve your appearance, allow you to eat almost all foods without embarrassment, and can help restore the facial contour around the mouth.

With careful planning and consideration, we can provide dentures which look very natural and realistic, and feel comfortable so that no one can tell that you are wearing a denture. With the aid of skilled dental technicians, specific choice of appropriately sized and shaded teeth are used to suit your personalised requirements. Dentures are fitted in place of natural teeth. A partial set replaces one or more missing teeth, a full set replaces all your teeth.

It is worth considering dental implants alongside dentures as this can improve their stability therefore giving you better function and more confidence.

Dentures can last for many years, but they and the mouth should be checked once a year. Dentures may need to be replaced if the denture teeth become worn or if the denture becomes loose.

Dentures remain a cost effective method of replacing missing teeth by providing the patient with a removable appliance.

The main disadvantages with dentures is that they are sometimes difficult to tolerate and are subject to slippage during speech and normal movement of the mouth. The bone in the jaw surrounding the missing tooth or teeth continues to recede, and this can lead to a gradual reduction of the lower profile of the face.

Dental Implants

Dentist in Walsall Dental Implants
A dental implant is an artificial titanium tooth root replacement placed into the jawbone and is used in dentistry to hold a replacement tooth, bridge or denture. Implant-retained replacement teeth are generally more comfortable than dentures as there is no slipping or movement. They are also a great fixed alternative to bridgework for replacing missing teeth, eliminating the need to reshape healthy teeth.

Dental implants can help to maintain the shape and structure of the jaw bone which will change after teeth have been extracted.
Benefits of implant-supported teeth:
  • They are the most natural solution functionally
  • Dental implants are fixed whereas removable dentures have to be taken out of the mouth for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Cannot be distinguished from real teeth in function and appearance in daily life.
  • Provide a stable foundation for a denture. They spare patients the disadvantages of conventional prostheses such as pressure points and poor fit. The palate is not covered by a denture material, which has a positive effect on speech and the sense of taste.
  • They make it unnecessary to reshape the neighbouring teeth.
  • Can prevent bone atrophy where a tooth is missing and implant is placed. Like natural tooth roots, implants transmit chewing forces to the jaw bone helping to preserve the natural bone shape.
  • Reliable: Implants are a safe, well-established, tried-and-tested treatment. Dental implants are a long-term solution. If cared for properly they can last a lifetime.
Dental Implants at Cheslyn Hay Dental
Restoring a gap with an implant involves 2 stages:-
Stage1: The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone below the gum
Stage 2: After a period of healing which is usually around 3months, the implant becomes integrated with the bone and can then be restored with an implant-retained crown, bridge or denture which fits on top of the implant.

We can arrange for you to have implants placed by a very experienced highly skilled practitioner, which can then be restored within our own practice. Please contact us if you require further information.

Sports Guards

Sportsguards are an important piece of equipment for use during contact sports. They can cushion and protect your teeth and gums from damage during an impact or collision. We provide custom-made sportsguards and they can be produced in a variety of colours.

Dental Sedation

Dentist in Walsall Dental Sedation
If you are nervous or anxious about undergoing dental treatment, then we can help you by using conscious sedation. It is a procedure used by dentists when treating patients who suffer from high levels of anxiety towards dental treatments.

Sedation dentistry has helped many people overcome their stress and anxiety to dental procedures. Many people are frightened of going to the dentist; this is nothing to be embarrassed about. It is important to discuss your particular fears with your dentist as there are various techniques available to help you overcome them.

Sedation has helped people who have not visited a dentist in years make that step towards better dental health.

Conscious sedation is a modern form of anxiety control. It involves the administration of a sedative drug to the patient before dental treatment that produces a sensation of drowsiness, relaxation and well being.

Anxiety and stress over treatments is relieved and the dentist is able to undertake any dental work necessary. The patient will still be conscious and able to understand any instructions given by the dentist but will experience either full or partial memory loss of the procedure. The use of sedation is very effective in helping nervous patients relax and cope with dental treatment.
