Root Canal Treatment
We ensure your treatment is a comfortable experience
Root canal treatment is the solution to saving a tooth that has become infected or severely decayed. Without treatment, the pain in the tooth will continue, the infection will spread and cause the formation of an abscess meaning tooth removal may be needed.
Decay, injuries and infection of the blood or nerve supply to the tooth, known as pulp or pulp the chamber, are the leading root canal causes.
Although root canals have a reputation for being painful, with modern anaesthetics and care, root canal therapy can be a pain-free procedure. The dentist will ensure you have the most comfortable experience possible.
Root Canal Symptoms
The symptoms that indicate a problem with the root canal include irritation and inflammation. These symptoms are due to decay deep in the tooth or nerve. Repeated dental procedures, such as large fillings or chips and cracks in the tooth, can also result in the need for root canal treatment.
Root canal symptoms include:
- Tooth pain
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- A small bump on the gums close to the tooth
- Localised swelling or tenderness
- Discolouration and darkening of the tooth
What happens during root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is a skilled procedure that is undertaken carefully by a dentist. Most often, treatment is carried out during two or more visits. Treatment begins with the dentist taking an x-ray of the tooth to see its size and shape.
If there is an infection, medication may be placed inside the tooth and a temporary filling may be fitted to protect the tooth from food and saliva. During the time between appointments, it is advisable to reduce the amount of chewing you do on the tooth
The treatment removes all of the infection and bacteria that multiply in the pulp chamber. The roots are cleaned or removed; however, the nerve is not vitally important to the health or function of the tooth. The pulp inside the tooth is removed, and the space is sealed using a special filling material, which prevents further infections.
Root canal treatment has a very high success rate and results in a tooth that can last a lifetime.
